Should I Do Cardio or Strength Training First?

It’s one of the most common questions I hear from clients—“Coach, should I do cardio or strength training first?” The answer depends on your goals, but the short version is this: do the thing you care about most, first.

Why Order Matters

Your body has a limited supply of energy and mental focus for each workout. Whatever you do first will benefit from the most strength, coordination, and attention. By the time you get to the second part of your workout, you’re already a little more fatigued—which can affect your performance and results.

If Your Goal Is Strength or Muscle

If you’re trying to get stronger, build muscle, or improve power for sports, start with strength training. Lifting heavy or explosively requires fresh muscles and a sharp nervous system. If you burn through your energy reserves with cardio first, you won’t be able to lift as much or maintain great form—which can slow progress and increase injury risk.

This doesn’t mean you can’t do cardio on strength days. It just means you’ll want to keep pre-lift cardio light, like a 5-minute warm-up, and save harder conditioning for after lifting or on separate days.

If Your Goal Is Endurance or Cardio Performance

If you’re training for a race, improving aerobic capacity, or boosting heart health, do cardio first. That way, your legs and lungs are fresh for longer intervals or higher-intensity efforts.

Strength work is still important for runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes—it improves efficiency, reduces injury risk, and builds power—but it should follow your primary cardio work if endurance is your top priority.

For General Fitness or Weight Loss

If you want a balance of strength and cardio—or your main goal is weight loss—order isn’t as critical. You can alternate which comes first from session to session or do circuit-style workouts that blend both. The key is consistency and total weekly training volume, not just the order.

A Practical Rule of Thumb

  • Strength & muscle focus: Strength first, cardio second.
  • Endurance & aerobic focus: Cardio first, strength second.
  • General fitness: Mix it up or combine.

The Takeaway

There’s no one “right” order for everyone. It all comes down to your main goal. Start your workouts with the training that matters most to you, when you’re fresh and at your best.

Remember, the most effective workout isn’t about a magic sequence—it’s the one you’ll do consistently, with effort and great form, week after week.
